“I need my taxes done, I think I need a CPA.”
You could hire a CPA, especially if your tax return is pretty basic. There’s nothing really wrong with that. But let me ask you this, do you know what CPA stands for? A CPA is a certified public accountant. CPA does not equal tax experience. That’s not to say that there aren’t CPAs out there with tax experience. If you do choose to go with a CPA be sure that they have a masters in taxation.
But hiring a lawyer to do my taxes seems a bit over-the-top.
It can seem weird to hire a lawyer to do a basic tax return. Here are some reasons why it makes sense:
- A tax attorney is very familiar with the US tax code and laws.
- If you have a complicated return that includes a business or two, multi-state return, international return, or trusts, most CPAs won’t take those returns.
- A CPA tends to be quite a bit more conservative than a tax attorney would be.
- A tax attorney, at least at The Law Office of D. Mathew Blackburn, doesn’t just fill in the blanks and file your return. We look for ways to help save you money and offer advice and planning.
Okay, I guess that makes sense, but wouldn’t it be expensive?
Surprisingly, no! While we cannot speak for all tax attorneys, if you choose to have The Law Office of D. Mathew Blackburn do your tax returns we offer flat fee rates depending on the type of return you have. Our rates are comparable to CPAs and accountants. We’ve handled the standard 1040 returns all the way up to a 99 page mutli-business, multi-state, multi-trust return.
That all sounds great but I live outside of Colorado.
